7. David Chase: coming-of-age stories never get old

David Chase's new movie, "Not Fade Away," his first major work since concluding "The Sopranos," tells the story of a thoughtful teenage boy (John Magaro) growing up in New Jersey during the 1960s. Flat December light settles over the film's suburban snowbanks in winter, mountains of leaves clog the gutters in autumn, the Jersey shore beckons in summer. The teen plays in a garage band with an outside chance at fame; he meets a girl who understands him; he runs afoul of his father (James Gandolfini), revealing a generational divide; he discovers the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and, at the movies, Antonioni. "What kind of movie is this?" the boy asks his girlfriend as they slump before "Blow-Up," simultaneously mystified and rocked to the core. "What kind of movie is this?"

  11. 4,667 'Jerry Maguire' videos and counting

There are days when you wake up and think that there is no wonder left in this world, no mountains left to conquer, no oceans left to explore, no frontiers left to discover. That, of course, is exactly the day you find yourself in an apartment in Logan Square surrounded by 2,700 VHS copies of "Jerry Maguire," stacked from floor to ceiling, stacked so high and in so many teetering rows that you are reminded of layers of the Earth's crust, only instead we're talking layers of Jerrys.

  13. Eddie Vedder surprises with Cat Power, Glen Hansard duets in Fort Lauderdale

In 2011, the Seattle-based rock band Pearl Jam celebrated 20 years in a business that is seldom kind to artists with a taste for longevity, and the group feted itself with an international tour, a Cameron Crowe-directed theatrical documentary and a career-spanning anthology. If it was an act of self-congratulation, it was a well-deserved one, as the band had survived the grunge trend, overnight success, a war with Ticketmaster, the ascendance of hip-hop and the waning of rock. The anniversary offered Pearl Jam an opportunity to take a breath, take stock and say to itself and its fans, “Look where we are, and look where we’ve been.” Left unstated, however, was the question, “Now, where do we go?”

  17. A chat with Chabon

Michael Chabon's best-selling new novel, “Telegraph Avenue,” is set in and around Brokeland Records, a used-vinyl record store on the border between Oakland and Berkeley, Calif., where Chabon has lived since the late 1990s. The story follows the store's co-owners, band mates Archy Stallings (the son of Luther Stallings, a former star of Blaxploitation martial-arts movies) and Nat Jaffe, as they struggle to keep Brokeland going in the face of competition from a new megastore owned by Gibson Goode, a former NFL quarterback who's now “the fifth-richest black man in America.” In their orbit are their spouses, Gwen and Aviva, both professional midwives; Nat and Aviva's gay son Julius; and his love interest, Titus Joyner, who turns out to be Archy's long-unacknowledged teenage son.

Bluegrass legend Del McCoury has been touring for more than 40 years, but the 73-year-old still likes to shake it up when he performs. "I do an all-request show where the audience shouts out what they want to hear. The band doesn't know what we are...
