  1. Dennis Hopper's carnival ride through life

"I was a beatnik, and then I was a hippie, and before that I was a bohemian," a sky-high Dennis Hopper confided to Merv Griffin on television one night in 1971, in a clip you can see on YouTube. On the opposite couch, Willie Mays uncomfortably refilled his glass of water and James Brolin sneered — Hopper certainly didn't belong to their worlds.

  3. Art review: 'Into the Mystic' at Michael Kohn Gallery

Mysticism isn’t new to art, having prompted (among other things) the emergence of pure abstraction into the Modernist lexicon more than a century ago. At Michael Kohn Gallery, a group exhibition of about 30 paintings, sculptures, video, prints and mixed media works from the past 50 years by 14 artists shows that it’s alive and well today — albeit with a suitably altered consciousness.

Some artists find inspiration in pop singers: Andy Warhol replicated Elvis Presley in silkscreens; Jeff Koons immortalized Michael Jackson in porcelain sculptures; and Jim Dine collaborated with the Beatles. For New York-based artist Will Cotton, the...

  11. Art review: Bruce Conner at Michael Kohn Gallery

    Culture Monster
The first exhibition of Bruce Conner's work since his death last year zeros in on the 1970s. It's a peculiar choice for a show and one that Conner, an irascible malcontent, would probably love. His works from that decade are......

  17. Dennis Hopper, easy-rider art enthusiast

It was a year ago, late on a June gloom Venice afternoon, when I last sat down with Dennis Hopper. We had been working for over 18 months on a publication of his photographs for Taschen Books. It was our last meeting before the book went to print and he was reading, with a mix of curiosity and bemusement, a biography I had written for the publication.

  21. Revisiting the flickering poetry of Bruce Conner

In a two-night event at separate venues, the UCLA Film & Television Archive, REDCAT and the Los Angeles Filmforum present two programs of the film work of artist Bruce Conner, who passed away in 2008 at 74. This is an increasingly rare opportunity to see the work of this deeply influential filmmaker, who was a notorious stickler regarding the exhibition of his films. The artist's widow, Jean Conner, and longtime friend Dennis Hopper will attend both events.

Ten seconds. Count it: One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten. Ten seconds was roughly how long it lasted. Nobody had a stopwatch, nothing can be proven definitively, but that's the consensus. The tornado that swooped through Utica at...
