5. Comics buff Israel Idonije unveils his superhero tale at C2E2

Israel Idonije doesn't wear a helmet or absorb punishing blocks while performing his side job as a comic book creator. Yet the former Bears defensive lineman insists that developing his superhero title "The Protectors" has been more difficult than tackling an NFL quarterback.

  7. It's a nerd world

Once a month, at Third Coast Comics in the Edgewater neighborhood, the store closes for the evening and the knitting comes out. Followed by the drinks. Drink & Draw & Knitting Night is the second Thursday of each month, as it has been since Terry Gant opened Third Coast nearly five years ago. When I asked who actually comes to this, he replied: “Nerds, artists, fiber-arts folks, nerds — by and large, super-nerdy people show up for knitting nights at comic book shops.”

  11. Three great sitcom sets for last-minute holiday shoppers

I am going to use the excuse that it's Christmas next week and you may have some shopping left to do to review three DVD sets I have been meaning to write about for months. (Something came up.) All are comedies. Two are complete sets and one is the first installment in what will eventually be a complete set, if you buy enough of volume one to economically justify a volume two. Artistically, there is no question of justification: All are brilliant and a little strange: Two -- "The Sarah Silverman Program" and Chris Elliott's "Get a Life" -- play with sitcom conventions; the other is plain unconventional.

  13. 'Five-Year Engagement': Engaging rom-com worth an 'I do' ✭✭✭ 1/2

A lot of terrible romantic comedies come along in a given year, and after five or six you begin to question your belief in anything — romance, comedy, movies, even terribleness itself. Before you know it you're trying to break the fever and hit bottom, deliberately, with repeated viewings of films co-starring either Katherine Heigl or Gerard Butler or, worse, their near-lethal joint effort, the Yugo of rom-coms: "The Ugly Truth."

  15. 'The Sarah Silverman Program: The Complete Series'

Anyone who knows comedian Silverman's caustic style won't be surprised by the similar persona of her fictionalized self - along the lines of how "Seinfeld" operated - in this Comedy Central show, placing her in all sorts of bizarre scenarios that put twists on the most common of occurrences.

  17. The Five-Year Engagement

I don’t mind a comedy going for two hours but when a lot of it isn’t working, I start to wonder why they didn’t just cut 20 minutes off the thing. I often watch movies with Jason Segel wanting to punch his face. I’m not sure why.
