1. 'Jack the Giant Slayer'

The fable of "Jack and the Beanstalk" gets a big revision from director Bryan Singer in this hugely visual fantasy, which succeeds on its sights even when the dramatics fall short. Nicholas Hoult ("Warm Bodies") plays courageous Jack, who ascends into a...

3. 'Arthur Christmas': How spare heir to Santa's throne saved the holiday — 3 stars

Five years ago, the Bristol, England-based Aardman animation folks — who created the stop-motion legends Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep and therefore are eligible for sainthood — made the digitally animated British/American co-production "Flushed Away." Jampacked with peril, if not with charm, the film had both eyes on a crossover American audience that never materialized.

5. Cast makes 'Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' shine ✭✭✭

A comedy-drama saved by the casting bell,"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" arranges for a tiptop collection of British character women and men to bring out the best in a pleasantly predictable story. Wait. Shouldn't that be "unhappily predictable"? Not always, folks: Some projects are better off going easy on the surprises, and concentrating on a reassuring level of actorly craft.

7. Movie Review: Arthur Christmas

Frankly My Dear - Orlando Sentinel
“Arthur Christmas” is a spirited, comically chaotic and adorably anarchic addition to the world's over-supply of holiday cartoons. It's very British, in other words — from its producers (Aardman, the folks who gave us “Wallace &...

13. Film review: 'Jack the Giant Slayer' is an enjoyable fairytale

Earlier this year, I had the displeasure of reviewing "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters."The R-rated update on the fairy tale made for one of the most miserable moviegoing experiences I've ever had in my life.

15. Review: Nothing magic about 'Jack the Giant Slayer'

Pity poor Jack. There he was, minding his own business in some dusty fairy tale book when the powers that be dragooned him into active service as the front man for the would-be blockbuster "Jack the Giant Slayer." Of course, Jack's been through the...

17. Roots of some giant problems in 'Jack the Giant Slayer' ★★

Most modern fantasy adventures are distinguished, if that's the right word, by shot after shot of actors gaping at amazements — beanstalks busting out of the ground, for example, or flaming trees being flung as weapons at the king's castle — along with actors running away yelling "Look out!" or "Aaaggghhhhh!!!" while being pursued, say, by a digitally animated giant with two heads. The movies have been into such trickery across the medium's entire life span, back to Georges Melies. It's simply a matter of the method.

21. New spin on old tale with 'Jack the Giant Slayer'

Opening Friday Jack the Giant Slayer One thing this current run of blockbuster fairytales inspired by Tim Burton’s "Alice in Wonderland" has taught us is how very hard it is to be Tim Burton. Multiple versions of "Snow White," a comic splatter...
