11. Rae Armantrout's probing new collection

The only time I met the poet Rae Armantrout, a few years ago, I escorted her from her hotel to the lecture hall at the University of Chicago where she was to read. We chatted, and she mentioned that she had a new book coming out. I asked her what it was called. “‘Money Shot,'” said this smallish, birdlike woman in her early 60s. The incongruity of hearing such a phrase issue from such a mouth (Google it if you don't know what it means; this is a family paper) strikes me now as an apt metaphor for Armantrout's career and work.

  15. 'Glass Guignol: The Brother and Sister Play' Playing at Wesleyan

Writer/director Lee Breuer, who also co-founded the New York-based experimental theater company Mabou Mines, staged Tennessee William's A Streetcar Named Desire in 2011 for the Parisian Comedie Francaise, then took his exploration of Williams further with Glass Guignol: The Brother and Sister Play, a meditation on the famed writer's strange, semi-erotic relationship with his sister, Rose Williams. Kinky weirdness? Probably. Head to the Connecticut premiere of the work on Saturday, but only after attending the free panel discussion with Breuer, Maude Mitchell, and dramaturg Thomas Keith on Feb. 14 at 4:15 p.m. (also at CFA Hall).

  19. 'Carved In Stone' A Study Of Macabre Artistry

These persevering artifacts dot the landscape, here and there, in clumps, reminders of a time and a people long passed. Where else but in New England can you walk up and touch something hand-crafted by the first generations of Europeans on this continent? No climate control, no docent or admission, no rope barrier. History is there for the touching and reading, right there on a tablet — a stone tablet.
