5. Little Feat perform at the Quick Center in Fairfield on Jan. 7

Little Feat was founded by guitarist Lowell George (who died in 1979) and keyboardist Bill Payne (who remains in the band) in 1969 after George was fired from Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. (Some say he was fired because Zappa thought he needed to form his own band; Some say he was fired because his song "Willin'," which went on to become a Little Feat song, was about drugs.) With a handful of breakups and reformations with slightly different lineups, the band has persisted and will be playing at the Quick Center this Saturday, the inaugural concert by a new promotion business called M.T. Heads, run by former FTC Executive Director Miles Marek and Tyler Grill of Grill Entertainment Group. Little Feat has seen a spike in popularity since Phish covered their album Waiting for Columbus in its entirety at one of their fabled Halloween shows in 2010, helping a new generation of ears discover their catalogue.

  7. The Bellarmine Museum of Art in Fairfield documents the experiences of Italians

For the past 40 years, Anthony Riccio has been documenting the experiences of Italians and Italian-Americans in Southern Italy, Boston's North End and New Haven's Little Italy using black and white photos and recorded conversations. A selection of these works will be on display at Fairfield U's Bellarmine Museum of Art for the next two months that reflect the changes his subjects have experienced over the course of their lives.

  9. Babes in Toyland at The Quick Center in Fairfield on Dec. 18

American Family Theater's Babes in Toyland begins with a cast of fairy tale characters coming to life, one by one, and telling their stories via dance in an epic opening sequence. There's Jack, Jill, Barnaby, Mary, Widow Piper and the toy soldiers, to name a few. And then they have adventures. Classic songs from Victor Herbert's 1903 original musical (some of which were also in the Laurel and Hardy film version from 1934) like "The March of the Toys," "Toyland" and "I Can't Do the Sum" are complemented by new songs by playwright and composer Don Kersey, glittering sets and special lighting effects that will hopefully keep the children engaged and entertained. Or you could go see The Nutcracker at every other theater in the state. Your choice.

  11. The Greater Bridgeport Symphony Performs Handel's Messiah at Various Locations

Handel's Messiah was a slow burn — it was first performed in Dublin in 1753, and wasn't very popular at all for a while. It was originally written to accommodate small, practical-sized groups of musicians, but was inflated to orchestra/giant choir size following the composer's death, and has only increased in popularity since. It went viral, if you will. Mozart was one contributer who spiced it up a bit, into the epic go-to holiday extravaganza that it is today. (Hey, if you're going to have an editor, it might as well be Mozart.) See the Greater Bridgeport Symphony's version of the oratorio conducted by Benjamin Loeb (pictured) on Thursday at the Quick Center's Kelly Theatre, Saturday and Sunday at The Klein. The New Haven Symphony Orchestra will stage their interpretation at the Edgerton Center on Friday.

  15. Artist James Prosek on display at Belarmine Museum of Art in Fairfield through Jan. 24

Consider a fish with the head of a parrot. Or a swordfish that mated with a rooster, producing offspring. Or a geisha girl whom is also an eel. Artist James Prosek has gone through the trouble of painting up these ridiculous creatures so that you don't have to use your brain too hard imagining what they might look like. See these watercolors alongside several taxidermied specimens that further emphasize the overall weirdness of the works in question through January 27th at the Bellarmine Museum of Art at Fairfield U. The show was scheduled to close by the end of the year but was extended — probably by popular demand of sideshow employees.

    Hartford Courant
