  4. Green Wheels: Connecticut is leading the way to garage-based sustainability

When you think of green buildings, does a parking garage spring to mind? I didn't think so. But in fact these towering monuments to our car-crazed culture present fabulous opportunities for greening, because their big flat spaces are ideal for rooftop community gardens, wind turbines, solar and more. You could even graze cattle! Paul Wessel, a longtime Connecticut community organizer, is the executive director of the newly launched and Hartford-based Green Parking Council, which aims to do the equivalent of green LEED certification for garages.

  10. Freetime: Barkley Hendricks Showcases Caribbean Landscapes at the William Benton Museum

Barkley Hendricks, a professor of studio art at Connecticut College and Yale alumnus who won a 2010 Governor's Awards for Excellence in Culture & Tourism, heads to Jamaica every winter when the cold gets to be too much to bear. But he hardly hangs around sipping mojitos (although he may do that as well): he paints, furiously, finishing each work in a few hours out in the sunshine for days on end until it’s time to hit the airport. Some of Hendricks’ fair-weather work will appear at the Benton Museum as part of Some Like It Hot, an exhibit of Caribbean landscapes and West African figurative paintings and photographs, including a suite of works depicting the Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti (pictured), whom Hendricks documented when he visited Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana in the late ‘70s. Don’t wait until, say, late November to pay a visit, or you might find yourself fighting throngs of frosty art enthusiasts.

  20. Irreconcilable differences at the end of the day: Men, women and housework

Men, it's your health and happiness or hers. Women, it's your health and happiness or his. At the end of the day, if there's housework to be done (and there's always housework to be done) and you’re both employed (as almost 52% of married couples with children younger than 6 are), there's only one winner.
