1. Hoffman voices support for Western Wall plan

Introducing Anat Hoffman at Temple Beth El of Boca Raton last week, Rabbi Dan Levin remarked that as Jews celebrate the 65th birthday of the state of Israel, the majority of people in the audience have "no memory of a world without Israel." Hoffman, a...

  7. Review: L.A.'s satisfying sprawl

Architecture exhibitions are notoriously tricky to pull off. It's hard to squeeze a whole building inside a museum, after all. And the number of forces that shape any piece of architecture — engineering, politics and money, to begin with — make it impossible to say with perfect clarity how a building came to be or what it means.

After the coffee. Before making sure to get home in time for the game. The Skinny: I couldn't help but notice that some of the "Mad Men" recaps I read last night seemed longer than the script for the two-hour season premiere. I like "Mad Men" and have...

  11. News Of The Weird: Undocumented Immigrant Gains Safe Harbor Thanks to Xbox Live Records

Undocumented immigrant Jose Munoz, 25, believed himself an ideal candidate for President Obama's 2012 safe-harbor initiative for illegal-entry children, in that he had been brought to the U.S. by his undocumented parents before age 16, had no criminal record and had graduated from high school (with honors, even). Since then, however, he had remained at home in Sheboygan, Wis., assisting his family, doing odd jobs and, admittedly, just playing video games and “vegging.” Living “in the shadows,” he found it almost impossible to prove the final legal criterion: that he had lived continuously in the U.S. since graduation (using government records, payroll sheets, utility bills, etc.). After initial failures to convince immigration officials, reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in March, Munoz's lawyer succeeded — by submitting Munoz's Xbox Live records, documenting that his computer's Wisconsin location had been accessing video games, day after day, for years.

  15. Keep moving, through the pain

The Boston Marathon resonates deep within my memory. I don't know when, exactly, it got there. My older brother ran distances, gliding around the streets of Atlanta in the days when that meant regular harassment from motorists, long before anyone had heard of the word "jogger." Few of them knew we had a marathon in Atlanta — it was 10 laps around a golf course — but most had heard about the one in Boston.

From Hollywood Boulevard and Staples Center to the Rose Parade and Disneyland, Southern California is full of the kind of cultural and iconic targets that local law enforcement have long feared would make a tempting target for both foreign or domestic terrorists.

  23. First quarterly report for Orlando theme parks: More Legoland, Limited Time Magic, work on Antarctica, Transformers

We’re just three months into 2013, and we are bursting with theme-park developments. And this is supposed to be the slow season. Instead of waiting nine months to compile a year-in-review post, I’ve decided to make quarterly reports that update the goings-on in one swoop. OK, a drawn-out swoop, but a swoop, nonetheless.
