11. The Afro-Semitic Experience Performs at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown This Friday

Middletown's Buttonwood Tree becomes high-octane Black-Jewish jazz-odyssey central on Friday, when pianist Warren Byrd and the Afro-Semitic Experience, buoyed by their new-ish project Jazz Souls on Fire, head over. There's jazz interpreted as klezmer, klezmer tweaked into jazz — pretty much everything in between these two seemingly disparate (but not really) musical worlds. It's not surprising that the veteran Connecticut group are NPR darlings. But anyone with a soul — not only sweater-wearing Faith Middleton groupies — will dig the cultural mash-up.

  21. Are drones along the border (all day, every day) cost-effective?

In its current form, the so-called Gang of Eight immigration bill increases funding for border security by up to $6.5 billion. When it comes to<a href="http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c113:1:./temp/%7Ec1136E7g9u:e58196:"> technology and equipment, the Senate bill doesn't go into much detail on how the government should spend its funds. But the bill is clear about one thing: It calls for 24/7 drone surveillance along the 1,950-mile southern border.
