  1. Sears Tower name change has few Chicago fans

Changing the name of Sears Tower to Willis Tower is a no-brainer, especially if you're Willis Group Holdings.

Changing the name of Sears Tower to Willis Tower is a no-brainer, especially if you're Willis Group Holdings. Corporate naming rights, whether it's a stadium or an office tower, boil down to ego, marketing and money, and now a London-based insurance...

Without fanfare, the doors at the new quarters of the Field Museum of Natural History opened at 2 p.m. on this date. "Speeches and music," noted one report, "would have been superfluous." Despite the lack of pomp and circumstance, some 8,000 people...

  5. Montgomery Ward's first catalog

From a cramped office on North Clark Street, surrounded by hoop skirts, lace curtains, red flannel, wool socks and more--and with Christmas a mere four months away--Aaron Montgomery Ward launched the nation's first mail-order business.

  7. The Chicago Fire

The whole Midwest was parched, caught in the thrall of a mighty drought. Chicago, with its preponderance of wooden buildings, inadequate fire codes and inferior firefighting equipment, was a conflagration waiting to happen. On this Sunday evening, it did.

  9. Plan of Chicago

On the 133rd anniversary of the nation's birth, Daniel H. Burnham issued his "Plan of Chicago" as a declaration of independence from the ugliness and confusion that characterized the city after more than a half century of explosive--yet haphazard-- growth. The internationally famous architect and city planner wrote, "The time has come (for Chicago and other cities) to bring order out of chaos incident to rapid growth."

  11. The Lakefront

For the fourth time, Montgomery Ward was entangled in a lawsuit over the destiny of the lakefront. For the fourth--and, as it turned out, the last--time, the Illinois Supreme Court upheld Ward's position. Grant Park must remain clear of buildings, the court ruled on this date, and the officials who had wanted to build the Field Museum in the park had no choice but to look elsewhere. The ruling was crucial in protecting Chicago's breathtaking lakefront, one of the city's chief glories.

  13. Market Square in Lake Forest

Evergreen Plaza in the southern suburbs opened in 1952. Old Orchard in the northern suburbs dates from 1956. Compared with Market Square in Lake Forest, both are newcomers. Four decades earlier, the business district of the North Shore community became the first planned suburban shopping center in the United States.

  15. World War II

After months of debate, the attack on Pearl Harbor left no more doubt. America was in the war. Most Chicagoans talked with bravado. "We'll whip 'em in two weeks," prophesied a Notre Dame junior over a glass of beer at a Loop bar. "Don't be silly," the man on the next stool said. "It'll take a few months."

  23. The Loop's Great Chicago Flood

Tens of thousands of office workers and store clerks streamed into the Loop as usual on this morning, only to be sent home for an unscheduled holiday. For many, that holiday lasted a week; for some, it went on for more than a month. The reason was one of the oddest calamities in American history: the Great Chicago Flood.
