  1. The holidays: time to sparkle

This time of year the outpouring of flash and sparkle is unavoidable; basic black velvet and silk, inevitable. We are encouraged to dress up with silver in the form of bugle beads or bangles that flash at the wrist. And gold? Don't get us started with the gold. Gold chains. Gold mini-dresses covered with golden sequins. Golden flats. Golden clutches. Gold jewelry, real or otherwise.

Yet most designer collections end at size 10. And on hundreds of high-fashion runways at international fashion weeks this month and last, ultra-slim models were wearing trendsetting designs that will never be manufactured in sizes to fit most American women.

  9. Toms has its alpargata, and now so does Bobs

Have you heard about the Southern California shoe label that sells its own version of the traditional alpargata shoe and has pledged to donate footwear to a needy child for each pair it sells? If you need a hint, the monosyllabic name — which is also a popular men's name — is four letters long.
