3. Fab co-founder Bradford Shellhammer lays out plans for change

For proof of how fast the business of design is changing, look no further than Fab. The site launched in 2010 as a TripAdvisor-Foursquare-Yelp social-networking hybrid called Fabulis was aimed at gay men. But having burned through most of its start-up cash, it regrouped in February 2011 with just three employees and a new mission to be an online design store.

  7. San Francisco all wet in regatta deal

Stop me if you've heard this one: Billionaire comes to City Hall. Says that if the city will get behind him, he'll bring a major sports enterprise to town and might even renovate some decrepit municipal infrastructure as part of the bargain. Huge economic boost foreseen. Won't cost taxpayers a dime.

  9. Smartphone apps for the beer lover

The smartphone revolution has invaded every facet of modern life, even the sanctity of the saloon. But there are some useful applications that can take your beer-hunting into the digital realm. Apart from the all-purpose apps like Yelp and the social networks, here are a pair of useful options for your iPhone or Android device that can help you find places to drink, discover new beers, and even remember what was in last night's ill-advised flight of imperial stouts.

  15. Justice and mercy, the identity twins

There is an interesting story in the Old Testament that involves a lender and a borrower. An audit was made, and the books didn’t balance. The borrower was called to account, and he pleaded poverty. The lender, not satisfied, held a legal advantage and so ordered the man to be sold … yes, into slavery. He then added that the man’s wife was to be sold. The lady, probably not involved, was drawn into the morass by being the wife of one who borrowed unwisely. The final thrust of the lender was to also mandate that the couple’s children also would be sold and separated from parents and each other.
