    Most folks think of Memorial Day as the day that kicks off summer or the day that the great-American-hot dog notches its first outdoor cooking of the year. For those that commemorate the holiday with solemn remembrances of Our war-dead this is mostly confined to wars of the last 75 years: WW II, Korea, Vietnam and most recently Iraq & Afghanistan. While these wars certainly deserve their well earned, somber Memorials they are not exclusive.

    1791 the only 4<sup>th</sup> of July address ever made by George Washington is in Lancaster.&nbsp;&nbsp; On a journey from Maryland to Philadelphia, President Washington stops for breakfast in Hanover two days prior.&nbsp;&nbsp; He spends the night in York in rooms above a tavern on Market Street.&nbsp; His arrival greeted by ringing bells, a salute from an infantry group and a light shining in each window of the courthouse.&nbsp; Sunday July 3<sup>rd</sup>, Washington attends mass at a Dutch church in a language he does not understand, being unable to find an Episcopal Minister in York.&nbsp; Crossing the Susquehanna River by ferry, Washington arrives in Lancaster where citizens there ask that he stop and participate in their 4<sup>th</sup> of July festivities.&nbsp;&nbsp;
