9. From politics to poetry

    Tribune Newspapers

  11. Fall book preview

It's tempting, looking at the fall's books, to think of this as a political season. Dick Cheney got it started with "In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir," and in November we'll see a different (and perhaps conflicting?) take when Condoleezza Rice publishes "No Higher Honor: A Memoir of My Years in Washington." John Paul Stevens reflects on his 35 years on the Supreme Court in "Five Chiefs: A Supreme Court Memoir"; Michele Bachmann weighs in with an as yet untitled book about her life.

  19. Amy Winehouse and the 'girl group' sound

When Amy Winehouse's album "Back to Black" first appeared on American charts, I was teaching the History of Rock at Johns Hopkins. Given my focus on the history of musical genres, I was immediately struck by her innovative use of the past. Ms. Winehouse was interested in the "girl groups" of the early 1960s, a music that was generally dismissed as frivolous. She heard those songs differently and created a contemporary version of that music style that is still fresh and relevant.
