  17. Writing about violence when you've covered it for years

I met Brother Jim about 10 years ago, just as I was starting to write about gangs and violence in Chicago. I had heard rumors of a guy who walked the projects in a denim robe, a man who used to stand between the buildings in Cabrini Green when rival gangs were shooting at each other, refusing to move until they stopped. I tracked him down and he was more than willing to take me with him into the city's housing projects, introducing me to people and helping me understand the problems these communities face. I got to know gang members and see them as human beings rather than violent abstractions.
