  11. Word power

Earlier this year, when Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a 100-book required reading list for his compatriots, it provoked anxiety, rekindling memories of Soviet-era censorship. The furor underscored an important point: that literature plays a fundamental role in defining a country's culture and its discourse.

  13. Critic's Notebook: Under the influence of Hemingway

For much of the 1980s, beginning when I was in college, I used to read a Hemingway book a year. The point was not self-improvement but rather a kind of exploration: What was it, exactly, about his writing that I'd missed? I had read "The Sun Also Rises" in high school and had admired its spare portrayal of 1920s expatriate life. But I'd also thought of it as more than a little stilted, even melodramatic in its way.

  21. A July Fourth reading list

In celebration of July Fourth, Printers Row set out to create a reading list of patriotic books. But, how to define "patriotic"? We decided to have each contributing Tribune writer and editor pick a title that corresponds to his or her own definition. Choose a title that matches your own — or one that may expand your view of what it means to be patriotic.

  23. For the love of words

On Sunday afternoon at Printers Row Lit Fest, away from the crowds strolling through aisles of used books or the ruckus of tots being entertained at the Lil' Lit Park Neverland, Richard Ford took to the stage in the Harold Washington Library Center and read the opening of his story "Under the Radar," from the short story anthology he edited, "Blue Collar, White Collar, No Collar." (Proceeds from the book benefit 826Michigan, a nonprofit that teaches writing to young people.)
