7. Our Picks: Whole Lotta Lincoln

Lincoln is the quintessential badass American president. He abolished slavery. He promoted economic modernization. He wore an awesome top hat that you can still see at the Smithsonian (see photo). And 147 years after his untimely and well-documented death at Ford's Theatre, he still enjoys a great deal of popularity. A couple weeks back we told you about the Promise of Freedom: The Emancipation Proclamation exhibit at the Fairfield Museum and History Center containing some Lincoln-signed documents (through Feb. 24). And then there was an auction of historic American artifacts at Rockwell Art & Framing in Westport earlier this month that included the chair Lincoln was seated in when he signed his nomination for the presidency. This Saturday afternoon, the Ferguson Library in Stamford brings Lincoln back to life with actor Larry Schneider taking on the 16th president's persona and clothing for a talk and an in-character Q&A.

  15. Honoring Abe Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation at the Fairfield Museum and History Center

Abraham Lincoln is among the most beloved Americans of all time, if not the most beloved. His legendary status make him seem like a character from a book, but he was a real dude. And the Fairfield Museum and History Center has proof: Two documents signed by honest Abe himself. One is a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation and the other a copy of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery. They're both on display at a new exhibit, Promise of Freedom: The Emancipation Proclamation, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the official signing of the document. On a historical scale, this wasn't really that long ago. There's a kickoff gala on Saturday afternoon, which Governor Malloy is slated to attend, that will feature a reading of the Proclamation and entertainment from the University of Bridgeport Chamber Singers.
