  11. Michael Robbins on reviewing

No one dreams of being a book reviewer when he grows up. You might dream of writing poems or novels or essays or even, if you are perennially picked last for teams in gym class, literary criticism (“We don't want Robbins, you can have an extra player”; “We don't want him, either!”). These forms have their glamour, even if only the novelist is much prized by the united malls of America. But as Samuel Johnson almost said, “No man but a blockhead ever wrote book reviews, except for money.” I have had the rare fortune to see my poetic aspirations realized and then some (though fame is a fickle food), but poetry don't pay the rent. Not that anyone's getting rich from writing about how unputdownable a thriller is.

  13. Leslie Zemeckis sashays into the history of burlesque

During the shabby final days of the last of the burlesque houses that once dotted State Street near Congress Parkway, three of us — in possession of a few bucks and self-confidence fueled by fake IDs — entered the Follies Theater and saw a show that featured, among long-forgotten performers, a dancer named April Showers.

  15. Review: 'Cooked' by Michael Pollan

Michael Pollan went shopping for lunch in a Brooklyn, N.Y., supermarket, and the news made the New York Times. That the Times' Dining section had asked him to go, along with Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Michael Moss, was the major reason, of course. But the idea of asking Pollan, the man who coined the dietary dictum, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants," to come down from the Mount Olympus of artisan food that is Berkeley, Calif., to shop with the hoi polloi in a regular ol' supermarket struck me as interesting, fun and, most of all, newsy.

Gossip columnist Michael Musto and theater critic Michael Feingold also were laid off in what headlines described as a "bloodbath," one that had led two top editors to step down last week when Denver-based Voice Media Group announced what it refers to as a restructuring.
