  1. The Sunday Conversation: Shepard Smith

Shepard Smith, longtime host of the nightly "Fox Report," is Fox News Channel's No. 1 anchor. That's thanks in part to his mix of folksy accessibility and anchor-worthy gravitas, which have earned him a perch at Politico.com, where his news clips are...

  3. COLUMN: Portman made right decision for wrong reason

Let there be no cheers for Rob Portman.  The Ohio senator is, pardon the tautology, a conservative Republican and last week, he did something conservative Republicans do not do. He came out for same-sex marriage. This is a man whose anti-gay bona fides...

  5. Another victim of black blindness?

    Call it black blindness.
Call it black blindness. It is a kind of myopia that afflicts some of us -- too many of us -- whenever we gaze upon a dark-skinned man. It causes some of us -- too many of us -- to see things that are not there, and to miss things that are. Sometimes,...

  7. The contradiction of Lincoln

He had lost a son many years before, the boy barely more than a toddler when he died. Now another son was dead, and grief sat on him like the shawl that draped his shoulders as he rattled around the big, cold house. His wife was emotionally troubled and...

  9. On taxes, Republicans discover the problem with "Never ever, ever, ever ..."

A few words to ponder as we sail toward the fiscal cliff. Those words would be: "That was then, this is now."
A few words to ponder as we sail toward the fiscal cliff. Those words would be: "That was then, this is now." Strip away the false piety and legalistic hair splitting offered by Republican lawmakers rationalizing their decision to abandon a pledge...

  11. Too many people who should not have guns do

On the day after the recent massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., police in Newport Beach, Calif., took a man into custody for allegedly firing more than 50 rounds from a semi-automatic handgun in the parking lot of a shopping mall. He aimed into the air and no one was hit, though one person was hurt slightly while running away. Police say 42-year-old Marcos Gurrola was destitute and frustrated with his circumstances. Firing dozens of rounds at the sky was his way of venting.

I suddenly find myself concerned about my blackness.
I suddenly find myself concerned about my blackness. It had never occurred to me to worry about it before. Then came the incident last month on ESPN's "First Take" program that initially got commentator Rob Parker suspended and then, last week, fired...
