  1. 'The U.S. Vs. John Lennon'

    Zap2It.com
In the case of David Leaf and John Scheinfeld's documentary "The U.S. vs. John Lennon," the defendant presents evidence for both sides. On the one hand, there's Lennon as a powerful agent for social change, the man who wrote the unofficial anthem of the...

  3. Odd behavior breaks out among celebrities

    The Hartford Courant
Could it be the heat and humidity? Or the smoke from wildfires out West and in Canada? Or could it simply be the anxiety of having to wait until September for a new season of "The Sopranos"? Whatever, there must be some explanation for the rash of truly...

  5. Outside Ozona

    FOR THE TIMES
Friday December 18, 1998      Like Jonathan Demme's "Handle With Care" (a.k.a. "Citizens Band") or even the old cult fave "Vanishing Point," J.S. Cardone's "Outside Ozona" is that customized species of road movie in which the characters are spokes and...

  9. Brainstorms brew in L.A.

It was a balmy night at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Hundreds of Angelenos were gathered on the roof deck of LACMA West after a debate about the changing role of art museums. Comedian Steve Martin was there, too: no arrow through his head, no dancing like King Tut, just one of the crowd. Now he was waiting, and waiting, to talk to his friend Adam Gopnik, an intense, erudite New Yorker writer who'd been one of the night's featured speakers. Gopnik was surrounded by fans, some there to praise his book "Paris to the Moon." He was talking, waving, shaking hands as if he were running for office.

  11. 'Inside Deep Throat'

By turns funny and sobering, sweeping and intimate, the consistently entertaining "Inside Deep Throat" plays like a giddy prance through the minefield of the last three decades of American sex and politics. It's a timeless story, really. Bawdy, can-do upstarts raise the vengeful ire of the cynically pious. Swap the X-rated 1972 comedy with a clever 18th century foundling and you'd have "Tom Jones." Minus the happy ending, of course.

Friday January 31, 1997      In a cozy, covert U.S. government research facility, bearded refuseniks drink tea and contemplate their screen-savers. Suddenly a gunman enters and systematically slaughters the staff--all except one, who throws the...
