1. There's one sure Super Bowl bet: Spectacle will give way to sadness

Bums me out that San Francisco stands poised to be a world champion in yet another sport. I was up there recently and it seemed to be mostly falling down. There are no right angles in that decaying city, and termites eat better than the tourists. Meanwhile, the teetering populace treats each night like Caligula's birthday.

3. Alex Smith handles demotion like a Super Bowl champion

NEW ORLEANS — Barely two months ago, Alex Smith stood alone under center as the NFL's hottest starting quarterback for one of its best teams.

5. Newton: The city that could be

Over the last couple of weeks, I've spent considerable time with the leading candidates for mayor, asking them about their approach to governance, watching them campaign and trying to get a feel for what distinguishes each from the others.

7. A backyard nuclear shelter? Yes, paranoia does sell

One sterling quality of American businesses is that they'll try to make money from anything.

9. Tiger Woods still has gas in the tank

LA JOLLA — Many will see Tiger Woods' victory Monday as a day of belaboring the obvious. He had a six-shot lead to start the day, only 11 holes left and a golf course that would give up birdies to his challengers as easily as Manti Te'o finds girlfriends.

11. Dwight Howard is at center of the Lakers' issue

The words, spoken by a glowing superstar at the end of a giddy tournament, formed an outline of hope. Five months later, into this same blueprint a despairing team buries its head. It was Kobe Bryant talking about Dwight Howard. It was the caretaker of...

Gush City. Everyone loves everybody now. There were Lakers hugs all around, with fans at Staples Center on Sunday joining the party, getting rally towels and the feel of a playoff game. Happy 79th birthday, Jerry Buss, as Gush City flattens Oklahoma...

17. Feel the passion, Lakers fans, as the moral victories pile up

I came to Staples Center on Friday night pretty darn excited, the Lakers coming off two incredible moral victories and Magic Johnson and Jim Buss full of good cheer.

19. For Democrats, unity and its pitfalls

It's hard to recognize the Democratic Party these days. In recent decades, it's been a divided, brawling tribe. But this year, Democrats are one big, happy family.

21. USC's dreadful performance is perfect way to conclude imperfect season

EL PASO — A football season that once swaggered through the warmth of a No. 1 ranking has curled up and expired in a cold, remote desert, buffeted by a chilled and foreboding wind.

23. Steve Lopez: It's too late for Cardinal Roger Mahony's apologies

L.A. NOW
Cardinal Roger M. Mahony doesn't appear to have changed much in retirement. He and his legal protectors have continued to fight the release of damning documents every step of the way. When that fails, and his role in the cover-up......
