1. Applauding Elizabeth Caballero

Lyric soprano Elizabeth Caballero was, of all places, shopping in a Miami Home Depot when she got the call: The Berlin State Opera needed a last-minute replacement for the demanding, exhausting title role in Puccini's "Madama Butterfly." The Miami-based Cuban-American had less than a month to rehearse the three-act opus. Coincidentally, Caballero had just finished mounting that same production in September for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, where, at curtain call on opening night, she dropped to her knees in tears under the weight of the audience's applause.

  3. A rhapsodic 'La boheme'

It shouldn't work. Not anymore. Not in the 21st century. That time-worn plot, the one-dimensional characters, the unabashed sentiment. But Florida Grand Opera's production of "La bohème" underscores how Puccini's masterpiece remains a moving, even relatable experience after more than a century of familiarity, lampoons and Broadway adaptations.

  13. Review: Zubin Mehta re-creates a night 50 years ago

Zubin Mehta was not in exactly unfamiliar circumstances, either standing in front of the Los Angeles Philharmonic on Thursday night or in receiving honors. He first faced this orchestra more than half a century ago as a 24-year-old guest conductor. The Walt Disney Concert Hall program celebrated the 50th anniversary of his first program, on Nov. 15, 1962, as music director of the L.A. Phil, which he headed for 16 seasons.

  15. Michael Haneke goes in close for the anguish of 'Amour'

Michael Haneke's devastating "Amour" opens Friday in Chicago. And since its Cannes Film Festival premiere in May, this tale of a long-married man and woman in their 80s, tested by illness and the limits of their own compassion, has moved audiences in a direct, emotional way unknown and, indeed, unintended by the director's previous, icy provocations.

  21. Interview: 'Homeland' star Mandy Patinkin's passion? Singing

Yes, Mandy Patinkin saw "Saturday Night Live" spoof "Homeland" in a sketch this month. And no, the South Side native and Kenwood Academy High School alum wasn't insulted by Bill Hader's impression of him or the exaggerated impersonations of his "Homeland" co-stars. Patinkin, like much of the public, thought the sketch was funny.

  23. 2012 in review: A rebel scene arises in classical music world

It's been a year of hand-wringing at arts institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. The world economy has been particularly effective in scarifying orchestras and opera companies. In the United States, several orchestras are in various states of economic disarray — Atlanta, Indianapolis and Minneapolis being only the worst. Overseas, orchestras in Germany and Britain, opera houses in Italy are dropping like flies thanks to severe cuts in public funding.
