  1. COT's 'Maria de Buenos Aires' a dark tango with history

With acts of terror again splashed across front pages, the sheer immediacy of Chicago Opera Theater's production of "Maria de Buenos Aires" hits you like a blow to the solar plexus. The show, which opened Saturday at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, may at times be uncomfortable to watch but is nevertheless essential viewing.

  5. CSO's Citizen Musician seeks right note

A little more than two years ago, the curtain lifted on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra-led Citizen Musician initiative, and CSO Association President Deborah Rutter told an overflow crowd at the Chicago Cultural Center: “All of you are citizen musicians. We consider you our foot soldiers in the movement.”

  11. Update: Epic Sound's Jada-Amina Harvey makes it to semifinals, Kuumba Lynx wins finals

The words and rhymes of 12 high school poets competing in the individual finals of the Louder Than a Bomb slam poetry festival echoed off the marble walls of the Chicago Cultural Center Wednesday night. Jada-Amina Harvey, a member of Kenwood Academy's Epic Sound slam team, was one of the poets whose scores in the semifinal round garnered her the opportunity to perform her poem in front of a packed audience that included Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Her semi-autobiographical poem described a young African-American girl's struggles and successes.

  13. Plotting out another great Story Week

It is a pleasurable thing to have drinks with Randy Albers and we have done so over the years at such saloons as, of course, the Billy Goat, as well as Stefani's 437, the Underground Wonder Bar and some joint in the South Loop whose name escapes me at the moment.

  17. Chicago Underground Film Fest finds a fitting home

Nearly 20 years after it was founded, the Chicago Underground Film Fest remains (perhaps appropriately) a relatively underground event. Two decades is a milestone, though, especially if you're talking about a fest that brands itself as the home of "defiantly independent" filmmakers. I give a lot of credit to artistic director Bryan Wendorf, who hasn't really had to compromise his initial vision. A quick glance at this year's lineup (starting Wednesday and running through March 10) shows that CUFF once again brings the perplexing, the wonderfully offbeat and strange to our city's movie screens.
