1. The Wadsworth in Hartford Featuring the Works of Artist Ahmed Alsoudani

Take a close look at Untitled (pictured) by Ahmed Alsoudani, a celebrated artist whose recent work was featured prominently in Venice, Italy, and ask yourself: what does this have to do with being an Iraqi-born American? Well, everything. Alsoudani was still in Iraq for the Iran-Iraq War of the '80s and the U.S.-Iraq Gulf War in the early '90s. He split in 1999 to study art in Portland, Maine, only to experience ramped up xenophobia in the wake of 9/11. His most recent works, which will hang in the Wadsworth until Jan. 6, allow glimpses into Alsoudani's jumbled-up memories and psychological baggage.

  3. World Premiere of 'The Last Intervention' at the Wadsworth in Hartford

Local filmmakers often get overlooked. They don't always get as much attention as local bands, artists or politicians. And that's a shame. But here's a chance to remedy that: head to the premiere of "The Last Intervention," a Hartford-based story of Melky (played by Alyssa Abreu), a "misunderstood, 18-year-old chica trying to find her place in the world," who's faced with an "intervention" staged by her divorced Dominican parents. Her dad, Cheche (played by Hemky Madera, pictured), swears he's not going to lose her to "drugs or to booze or to boys that do not know how to wear pants." Guests at the premiere will get to talk shop with director/producer Giovanny Blanco, writer/producer Sarah Thorp, producer Rafael Blanco and directory of photography Daniel Salazar III, and will likely get a chance to hobnob with a number of the actors.

  23. James Nares' new film looks at everyday moments

Set to an original score by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, artist James Nares' unscripted, hour-long high def video is a meditation on people-watching, shot over one week in September 2011 on the streets of New York City, from Battery Park to the end of Upper Broadway. Nares wanted his film to be about the everyday, magical moments we all experience but often overlook. It'll run at the Wadsworth until the end of October.
