1. Cathy Marie Buchanan on 'The Painted Girls'

In “The Painted Girls,” a carefully researched, deeply imagined historical novel by Canadian writer Cathy Marie Buchanan, the Belle Époque comes to vibrant, often aching life. It follows two real-life destitute sisters, Marie and Antoinette van Goethem, who are forced to turn to the then-none-too-reputable ballet training program at the Paris Opera to scratch out a meager living in the 1870s and '80s. Antoinette, older and prettier but less artistically gifted, becomes involved with a rough-hewn teenager destined for a life of crime.

  7. Fleming, Graham charm Lyric audience with rare duo recital

Lyric Opera patrons attending the duo recital by soprano Renee Fleming and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham Thursday night at the Civic Opera House probably did not expect they would be getting a guided tour of belle epoque Paris along with an exquisitely performed program of French songs.

  11. Luxury buyers find options at Millennium

Luxury real estate in downtown Chicago came roaring back in 2012, experiencing its best year since 2008. According to a recent report, sales of million-dollar homes rose by 15 percent last year, and while the rebound has been welcome news to sellers, it has also driven luxury supply to its lowest level since before the housing downturn, frustrating many high-end buyers.

  19. Visual arts: Year's exhibitions were both ambitious and unpredictable

The year 2012 brought exhibitions that were ambitious, unpredictable and sometimes downright messy — but when it comes to art, these are all good things. What's more, all that disheveled enthusiasm wasn't solely confined to the alternative spaces and apartment galleries — Chicago's museums got a little down and dirty too. This was a banner year for sprawling group shows based around participatory themes and methods. Our list of highlights, in no particular order:

  23. How theater ticket prices are changing like airline fares

When the Goodman Theatre announced its prices for its current production, "Sweet Bird of Youth," starring Diane Lane, it listed $89 as the top ticket price for that show, a price that duly appeared in this newspaper. And had you bought your decent main-floor seat for the Oct. 27 performance three weeks ago, $89 is indeed what you likely would have paid. On Wednesday afternoon, there still were tickets available on the Goodman website for that Saturday evening performance. But the top price? $120.
