  1. Best of Chicago's fringe theater scene in 2011

This time of year we’re inundated with reminders to shop local, but there’s never a bad time to check out smaller local theater companies who specialize in innovation, guts, and sometimes just sheer blissful goofiness. These artists mostly work for love, not money — and their damn-the-torpedoes commitment to craft over the bottom line makes our weekly voyages “On the Fringe” a homegrown adventure. Here are our top shows from 2011.

  3. Two for the show

The family that works on plays together, stays together. OK, so that's not exactly the old adage. But it might become a new one if the husband-and-wife acting team of Jason Odell Williams and Charlotte Cohn continue on the same artistic road they've been...

  5. Rep Stage's 'Or' looks at barrier-breaking Sixties — 1660s, that is

When the reign of Oliver Cromwell and his fellow killjoys ended, one of the first things the new English king did was order the theaters to reopen.
When the reign of Oliver Cromwell and his fellow killjoys ended, one of the first things the new English king did was order the theaters to reopen. Charles II didn't stop there. He allowed those theaters to do something previously unthinkable —...

  7. 'Or,' tells playwright's tale of intrigue; more fizzle than 'Sizzle'

    <strong>&quot;Or,"</strong>
"Or," ***1/2Traveler, lover, playwright, spy — Aphra Behn’s improbable careers could have filled a few John Le Carre novels. The 17th century author of “The Rover” is cited most often as the first woman who earned her living...

  11. Theater review: 'Celadine' at the Colony Theatre

    Culture Monster
Valentine’s Day may have passed, but the charms of Larry Cedar must be sung. The tall, acerbic actor, known for his delicious turns in Reprise’s “She Loves Me” and HBO’s “Deadwood,” is the reason to see “Celadine,” Charles Evered’s...

  13. NEIL LaBUTE

If I ran the NEA, I would immediately dismantle all &quot;artist" grants (solely because I've never been offered one myself) and use that money to create more diverse arts programs for inner-city schools. Just kidding. I'd definitely dismantle the grants because, as mentioned above, the awarding of said grants is obviously rigged and in desperate need of restructuring. I would not use the extra money in schools, however, because most kids wouldn't know "art" if it marched up and slapped them in the face. I would instead implement and fund various initiatives to examine "the sex lives of insects cited in the works of Marlowe and Shakespeare" and collect "recipe tips from noted female writers -- Aphra Behn to Naomi Wallace." Now that's money well spent on worthwhile projects -- just like my esteemed predecessors used to do.
