Irish hockey is going back to its outdoor roots.
Notre Dame will play its first outdoor hockey game at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, against CCHA rival Miami of Ohio.
It'll be part of a doubleheader, featuring not only Notre Dame against Miami, but also Wisconsin against Minnesota, according to Drew Russell, the associate vice president of Intersport, a sports and entertainment marketing company based in Chicago, which is organizing the event. It'll technically be a home game for Miami.
"We hope all the Notre Dame fans will be excited about it," Russell told WSBT.
"No news yet...in discussions with Drew (Russell)...that's all," Notre Dame associate athletic director Tom Nevala, the administrator for the hockey program, told WSBT in a text message.
While it's not yet a done deal yet, Russell said only the final contractual details remain to be worked out and that the deal will be finalized in the next week or two. He is confident the deal will take place.
"We feel pretty good," Russell said, adding that the event will be televised, but the particulars of that are one of the details still being worked out.
Interestingly, Notre Dame football is also scheduled to play against Miami at Soldier Field - the other Miami (FL) - this fall.
