NOTRE DAME – While they struggled on the court in Denver, the Notre Dame women's basketball team still came home winners.
"We love Notre Dame," said Lily Bennett, one of those who greeted the team when they arrived back at Notre Dame and showed her support with a poster. "We went to almost all of their games."
Fans were ready to celebrate a remarkable season, even though Skyler, Brittany, Devereaux, Kayla and Natalie were just one win short of a national championship.
"I was pretty sad they lost," said Cayla Byler, who also carried a sign. "They played a good game."
Fans brought their cameras. They had flowers and posters to let the team know one important thing.
"We're behind them, win or lose," said Kathleen Klimek," We love them all. They do a great job."
Head coach Muffet McGraw told fans she wanted the win. Through her heartbreak, fans found a way to put a smile on her face.
"Every time we take the floor, we want to make you proud of us," said McGraw. "I can't tell you how much this means – coming home after a loss and being greeted by all of you."
The team finished the season 35-4.
