    Watching the simple, beautiful French film &quot;Tomboy" a viewer cannot help but wonder: Would most American directors treat the notion of a 10-year-old girl pretending to be a boy with the same delicacy and lightness of touch? The theme itself is not new. But writer-director Celine Sciamma, coming off her previous feature, "Water Lilies," handles it with a disarming blend of the idyllic and the realistic, from first shot (the back of the protagonist's neck, in the sunshine, driving with her father) to last.
