INDY CAR DRIVER WITH COUNTRY CONNECTION DIES IN FIREY CRASH. Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died on Sunday from injuries sustained in a major car crash that happened during the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wheldon’s car went airborne as the result of a 15-car pileup on Lap 13 of the race. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 33-year-old British driver became part of the country music family when Curb Records and Big Machine Label group backed Wheldon with a car sponsorship during his successful run at the Indy 500 earlier this year. After his win, Wheldon made appearances on stage at the CMA Music Festival and during the 2011 CMT Music Awards. Sunday was his 134th career start.
