  3. NFL's free agency model punishes savvy teams — like the Ravens

The National Football League's plan is working well in Baltimore, the one where a good team penalizes itself.
The National Football League's plan is working well in Baltimore, the one where a good team penalizes itself. So far, that's what has happened here with the departure of five of the Ravens' 12 unrestricted free agents to other teams in the early period,...

  5. Ravens free agency by the numbers

Maybe it’s because I was a star mathlete in high school, but I love numbers. And we’ve spent plenty of time crunching them these past 10 days while waiting for the Ravens to make moves -- or purposefully not make moves -- in the new league year. Here is a handful of relevant numbers from this quiet free-agency period:

  7. Ravens expected to exercise patience when free agency opens Tuesday

The Ravens' goal was to re-sign Pro Bowl left guard Ben Grubbs before he officially hits the open market with hundreds of other NFL free agents Tuesday at 4 p.m. Now almost out of time and with seemingly no indication that Grubbs is willing to eschew free agency, they say their focus hasn't changed.

  9. 2012 NFL free agency primer: the defensive linemen

Houston Texans defensive end turned outside linebacker Mario Williams will be the marquee free agent this offseason not named Peyton Manning. (Interesting side note: The Texans drafted Williams No. 1 overall in part due to Manning’s presence in the AFC South and now they will both hit the market at the same time.) He is a natural at defensive end in a 4-3 defense, but did well enough in 2011 to garner interest from 3-4 teams.

  15. Quiet Yanda lowers boom for Ravens

If you really want to appreciate the violence of football when the Ravens take on the Indianapolis Colts at M&T Bank Stadium Sunday, take your eyes off Ray Rice and Joe Flacco for a second and focus on right guard Marshal Yanda.

  17. Each Ravens player prepares for the first whistle his own way

It's Sunday morning, not quite 8. Sunlight is peeking through the blinds in the Hyatt Regency Hotel room on Light Street where offensive lineman Marshal Yanda stays before every Ravens home game. His eyes are open. He might try to fall back to sleep, but the nervous energy pulsing through his body will make it tough.

The Ravens have a long history of promoting their defensive coordinators from within. Mike Nolan replaced Marvin Lewis. Rex Ryan replaced Nolan. Greg Mattison replaced Ryan. And Chuck Pagano replaced Mattison.

  21. John Harbaugh's moment, and a Seven Nation Army of Ravens fans

In the fourth quarter of the Ravens' Week 1 victory over the Steelers, there was a moment I'm not sure any of us could have imagined, or even fathomed, a year ago. Baltimore was putting the finishing touches on a therapeutic beat down of its...

  23. Ravens' new blocking scheme will lead to complaints about chop blocks

Apparently the Pittsburgh Steelers complained about the Ravens chop blocking, and it was only a matter of time before NFL teams called the Ravens out. The Ravens are using a blocking scheme similar to the one used in Denver when John Elway was the quarterback and Terrell Davis was the featured running back.
