SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State rode a seven-run fifth inning and its first four-home run game in seven years to a 12-6 victory over Southern Illinois Sunday afternoon at Hammons Field. Led by Kevin Medrano’s 3-for-5 day, the Bears (31-14,...

  9. Some positive signs for Cubs

There's no bad time to dominate a game. But the Cubs badly needed their best pitcher to slam the door Thursday, and that's exactly what mini-volcano Matt Garza did for them.

  19. Whispers: Lee weighty issue for Astros

There are no signs Carlos Lee is taking his walk year any more seriously than the first five on his $100 million contract. The Astros hoped he would report at 250 pounds but instead he was 274. He and Brett Myers aren't exactly role models for a young team. … Is it any surprise Jamie Moyer, trying to win a job with the Rockies at 49, needed some extra rest after a strong outing last Sunday? The man is only four degrees of separation away from Hall of Famer Eddie Collins, who made his debut in 1906. Moyer was a teammate of Nolan Ryan, who pitched to Ernie Banks, who faced Vic Raschi, who pitched to Doc Cramer, who was a teammate of Collins. … The Brewers' starting pitching has been looking great this spring. Yovani Gallardo is on the short list of NL Cy Young Award candidates, and Zack Greinke quietly has had a good spring. … The Rangers could be a good fit if the Cubs entertain offers for Marlon Byrd, which would open center field for rookie Brett Jackson. The Rangers aren't happy with their internal options in center — the young Cuban Leonys Martin is not ready — and are trying to move reliever Koji Uehara, who could provide innings in an uncertain Cubs' bullpen. … Spring training trivia: What non-roster invitee had more hits in 2011 than anyone on his team's 40-man roster? That's Juan Pierre, whose 178 hits were 26 more than Jimmy Rollins' team-high total for the Phillies. Pierre seems likely to win a job on the bench but is getting a serious challenge from Scott Podsednik, who predated him with the White Sox. Podsednik had four doubles in his first 33 spring at-bats. … Michael Bowden has caught Bobby Valentine's eye in his push to land a job in the Red Sox bullpen. He's out of options and would be a nice fit with the Cubs if he doesn't stick with the Red Sox. Bowden held right-handed hitters to a .121 average at Triple A last year and has developed a split-finger to help against left-handed hitters. … Scouts love Tom Milone, the Athletics' strike-throwing left-hander acquired in the Gio Gonzalez trade. He's likely to open the season with the A's. … Andy Pettitte's comeback would have made more sense if this were still 2011, when the Yankees needed pitching. They're deeper this year with Michael Pineda and prospects Dellin Betances and Manny Banuelos are in line for mid-season promotions this year. … Bryce Harper still is in the picture for the Nationals, despite missing time with a strained calf. Manager Davey Johnson insists he'll leave Florida with his best 25 players, whoever they are because "non-contenders'' worry about delaying arbitration and free agency, and obviously Johnson believes his team has outgrown such low expectations. … Good move for potential Dodgers owner Steven Cohen to meet with Tony La Russa about running the baseball operation if he lands the team. La Russa is looking for that type of challenge, although he does not want to be a GM.

  21. Whispers: Cubs look like winners in Soler derby

While the Cubs are considered the leader in the Jorge Soler derby -- executives with multiple teams are saying they have agreed to a $27-million deal with the 19-year-old center fielder -- they do not have a deal in place. It still may be weeks before Soler is cleared to sign and a mystery team could slip in at the end, as the A's did with Yoenis Cespedes. The White Sox, Yankees and Nationals are among those known to be involved. …

  23. MLB whispers: Brewers' rotation depth key in weak NL Central

Shaun Marcum's aching shoulder remains a concern but he pitched in a minor-league game last week and hopes to be ready to open the season as the No. 4 or 5 starter behind Yovani Gallardo, Zack Greinke and Randy Wolf. Starting pitching figures to be an advantage for the Brewers in the weakened NL Central. …
