7. Food on the Table: In Season: Radishes

Spring is here and it is the perfect time to rediscover ruby-red radishes. Radishes, although available year round, are fresh and in season from April through October. Along with cabbage and cauliflower, radishes are a member of the Brassica family. Radishes mature very quickly and only take three to four weeks from planting to harvesting. Radishes are a root vegetable with a crisp texture and slightly peppery flavor. Spring radishes are much milder than late summer radishes which tend to have a sharper bite.

  11. Eat your vegetables - in stages

An apple infamously did the trick for Adam and Eve, but for Willi Galloway, it was the seed pod of a forgotten radish that opened her eyes. It was that crunchy, spicy pod, tossed back as an impromptu snack, that changed the Portland, Ore.-based writer and editor's perspective on kitchen gardening.

  15. A Night At Taste of the Nation Hartford

Here's a way to stand out from the crowd: A giant ice sculpture in the shape of an "M," with colorful shells embedded in the frozen water, surrounded by a display of endless raw oysters. Behind the table, Max Restaurant Group's Scott Miller and Kim Koczka led a team of chefs, expertly shucking fresh bivalves with sauces: uni lobster-roe emulsion, yuzu gelee, razz-and-radish sake madness.
