Greek immigrant William Sianis purchased the Lincoln Tavern, across from Chicago Stadium on Madison Street, in 1934. According to the legend, a goat fell off a passing truck and wandered into the tavern, whereupon Sianis adopted the animal and renamed his establishment as the Billy Goat Tavern. Sianis gained his greatest fame when he tried to take the goat to the 1945 World Series at Wrigley Field. Rejected even though the goat had a ticket, Sianis declared a curse on the Cubs, who have not reached the World Series since then.
