3. Why Chicago needs bigger place on world's stage

At its 25th summit in Chicago this weekend, NATO will be preoccupied with the tricky business of how to advance its various institutional priorities — like global security and the building of stability — even as its member nations are more worried about local recession and red ink. Austerity may abound across Europe and beyond, but NATO still says it intends for the Chicago summit to be the place where philosophical decisions taken at the Lisbon summit 18 months ago are turned into actual programs and initiatives.

  5. 'Slumdog Millionaire' musical in works without Danny Boyle, others

Theater producers love turning movies into musicals, and the energetic, Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” looks like a good candidate for a screen-to-stage makeover. But after years of negotiations proved fruitless, a planned London musical about the rags-to-riches game show contestant is now being developed without the participation of any of the film’s key creators, including director Danny Boyle and composer A.R. Rahman.

  9. Some butterflies get unique wing patterns by crossbreeding

The Postman butterfly, a brightly colored favorite of collectors and scientists since its discovery in the Victorian era, tastes bad -- very bad. Predators who have bitten into one shy away from future contact because of the foul aftertaste. The butterflies have taken advantage of this trait by developing distinctive black and red wing coloration that quickly warns predators to stay away.

  23. Some of the best specialty beers are being made right here in Connecticut

Beer is the new wine. We've been hearing it in the bar business for at least three years running now. And why shouldn't it be? Beer is complex and varied. Beer's an excellent complement to food. And in an increasingly DIY, locavore culture, beer is something that can be made in a kitchen, with ingredients found locally – or better yet, in a local brewery or brewpub. But, much like wine, craft beer — as specialty brews made in small batches are known — can be overwhelming in its complexity. Here's some of the basic terminology — with insights from those in the know. And, as it happens, May 14 through May 20 is American Craft Beer Week, so there will be hundreds of events around the country, and several right here in Connecticut, including the Rising Pint Brewfest in East Hartford, showcasing beers from all over. It's a good time to test your tasting skills.
