9. Movie Review: The Adventures of Tintin

"The Adventures of Tintin" is the latest film from director Steven Spielberg and is an adaptation of a very popular comic-book series. This is a return to the family action genre for Spielberg with his last film being the ever not-so-popular "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". We all know Spielberg from such classics as Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park, the Indiana Jones series and many, many more influential films. That said, this is the first animated feature that he has directed. The film was shot digitally and uses motion capture animation which was made popular in such films as The Polar Express and Avatar.

  11. Pretty, manipulative 'War Horse' sort of works -- 2 1/2 stars

On stage in London and New York, "War Horse" has found a wide and emotionally drained audience. How could it be otherwise? The horrors of World War I plus the horrors of war as endured by a horse, capped by a ruthlessly effective happy ending: I don't mean to be glib, but that is an awful lot to cry about.

  15. 'Adventures of Tintin' fake, frantic, tiring -- 2 stars

Directed by Steven Spielberg, a longtime fan of the source material, "The Adventures of Tintin" begins with a gorgeous animated credit sequence, deftly incorporating bits of the narrative about to unfold. It's as nifty as the overture in Spielberg's earlier "Catch Me If You Can," both scored, with a glancing touch, by his longtime mood generator, composer John Williams. It's always gratifying to hear what Williams can do when he's not in attack mode.

  18. Adventures on Tintin's home turf in Brussels

Director Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" starts innocently enough — with Tintin, it always does — at a flea market, where the dauntless boy reporter finds an old model boat. But blistering barnacles! — as his buddy Capt. Haddock would say — there's a secret inside about a long-lost pirate treasure. So Tintin sets out to find it, undeterred by goons with guns, crashes, explosions, cracks on the skull from behind.

  22. Smart moves, sad omissions from Golden Globe 2011 movie noms

Allow me to begin my take on <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/sns-rt-awards-golden-globe-awardsmt1thewrap33624-20111215,0,3709779.story" target="_blank">this morning's Golden Globe nominations with a sigh of relief: the extremely shallow, incredibly exploitative assumed Oscar contender "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," one of the worst movies of the year, received zero nominations. None. Not, as some predicted, for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Max Von Sydow) or Best Supporting Actress (Sandra Bullock). Well done, Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
