3. Film review: 'The Dictator' is humorous, but stretches bad taste

Sacha Baron Cohen's central shtick — semi-documentary episodes in which he entraps real people — has always, by its nature, had a built-in self-destruct mechanism. The more famous he becomes, the less likely that anyone will fall for his masquerades as Ali G, Borat and Bruno. With “The Dictator,” he finally abandons his “Candid Camera”-like stunts for a fully written script — perhaps with some improvisation — acted by professionals. In other words: No innocent bystanders were humiliated in the production of this motion picture.

5. 'The Dictator' offers iron-fisted, ham-handed laughs, critics say

24 Frames
In "The Dictator," Sacha Baron Cohen combines his knack for absurd characters with the grand comedic tradition of skewering despotism on the big screen. Critics agree that the film is funny and vulgar; whether the combination truly works depends on whom...

11. Movie review: 'The Dictator' rules with crudeness and smarts

Like its creator and star Sacha Baron Cohen, the comedy of "The Dictator" is mercurial to the extreme and as crude as the massive oil reserves of Wadiya, the fictional North African nation where his latest movie prank begins. By turns hysterical, heretical, guilty, innocent, silly, sophisticated, teasing and tedious, the film follows the power-mad leader Admiral General Haffaz Aladeen as he loses his bearings, his beard and his heart in New York City.

17. 'The Dictator' review: "Not very nice" -- Borat

** (out of four)
** (out of four) After revealing multiple forms of intolerance and the vast majority of his body in the hilarious “Borat” and fearlessly uneven “Bruno,” Sacha Baron Cohen apparently has nothing left to expose. That could be why...

19. 'The Dictator' quality falls between 'Borat' and 'Bruno' ✭✭ 1/2

For most of its quick and extremely dirty running time, the new Sacha Baron Cohen offender "The Dictator" wages war with itself, crude nonsense up against crude nonsense that's really funny. Then comes the golden ticket, the speech of speeches, the scene in which the fictional North African dictator General Admiral Haffaz Aladeen addresses a gathering in New York City, recanting his barbarous ways with a heartfelt confessional.
