Pop & Hiss

  7. Howard Stern shows America he got talent

As controversy over Howard Stern's debut on "America's Got Talent" rose earlier this week in anticipation of Monday night's season premiere, I couldn't help but find a bit of humor in all of the hate and contempt being spewed toward the self-proclaimed "King of All Media."

  9. Romney campaign calls reporter restrictions a staff 'error'

TAMPA, Fla. — Throughout the Republican primaries this year, no other campaign came close to approaching the message discipline and efficiency of Mitt Romney’s campaign. But campaign aides took that approach to a new level on Wednesday in Florida when several aides tried to forcibly block reporters from approaching the candidate on the rope line.

  13. Today's Buzz: Is Rush Limbaugh a hall-of-famer?

Conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh was inducted Monday into the Hall of Famous Missourians. Limbaugh's bust joins an exclusive group that includes writer Mark Twain, baseball great Stan Musial and former president Harry Truman. News of the upcoming honor for Limbaugh first broke soon after he called a law student a "slut" for testifying before Congress in favor of mandatory insurance coverage for birth control - a remark he later apologized for. Missouri's Republican House speaker continued to push for Limbaugh's induction despite being presented with petitions signed by 35,000 opponents. Do you think Limbaugh's success and influence make him worthy of the honor? Or do you think his habit of attacking and ridiculing people with different political views disqualifies him? Talk about it!

  19. Can Mitt Romney recover from bullying report?

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is trying to get past allegations that he bullied a student when both were in high school, in 1965. The Washington Post reported that he cut off a student’s hair while the student cried out for help. Fellow students have corroborated the story. The student who was bullied, however, has died, and his family says the story's portrayal of the victim is factually incorrect. Other classmates at Romney’s prep school have issued statements in support of the candidate. Romney says he doesn’t remember the incident. Romney’s supporters point out that President Obama, his rival, wrote in a memoir about tormenting a black girl when he was a boy. Will this incident pass? Or will it doom Romney?

  21. Obama's end zone dance

This week, Republicans have been criticizing President Barack Obama for his surprise trip to Afghanistan marking the one-year anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden. By accusing the president of hyping the commemoration, they apparently hope to undercut the political potency of his biggest foreign policy coup. Instead, the GOP critics may merely make themselves look a bit silly.

  23. Religion and politics, but no fireworks

Unless you want a fight to break out at a cocktail party or a family reunion, conventional wisdom has it, don't talk religion or politics. I did both in this space last Monday, and then I crawled in a bunker and waited for the fireworks to begin. "Be...
