1. My Top 10 Shows On Connecticut Stages This Past Season

I remember this time last year when it came time to review the theater season in Connecticut. I felt pretty discouraged. Sure there was plenty of fine work but few shows really knocked my critical socks off with the kind of productions that you immediately want to tweet your friends about, the shows that you would actually see again — and pay. The works that stay in your memory for years.

3. Word power

Earlier this year, when Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a 100-book required reading list for his compatriots, it provoked anxiety, rekindling memories of Soviet-era censorship. The furor underscored an important point: that literature plays a fundamental role in defining a country's culture and its discourse.

5. Audiobooks are going Hollywood

When it came to reading a book out loud, Dustin Hoffman was a bit rusty. The last time he had done something similar was in New York City in the late 1960s, right after filming "The Graduate." A local radio station had recruited 30 or so people, including Hoffman, to read "War and Peace" on air, around the clock, until it was done.

11. Dan Savage on helping gay kids and his MTV show, 'Savage U'

You're probably familiar with Dan Savage because you— or, OK, "a friend"— has taken advice from his humorous, nationally syndicated sex advice column, "Savage Love." Or perhaps you know Savage from his work as the co-founder of It Gets Better, a video-based project formed in 2009 in response to the suicides of teens who'd been victims of sexual identity-themed bullying.

A Spring Theater preview? But doesn't the regular theater season end in May?
A Spring Theater preview? But doesn't the regular theater season end in May? For some of the state's half-dozen major regional theaters, that's true. Others, which follow a spring-to-winter schedule instead of the academic-year calendar preferred in...

15. February House playing at Long Wharf Theatre's Stage II in New Haven

Have you made it down to Long Wharf Theatre to see February House yet? If not, the show runs until Sun., March 18, so you've still got a few chances left. February House is a musical about several artists living together in a house in 1940s Brooklyn Heights. Composer Gabriel Kahane has combined jazz, classical operetta, musical comedy and modern folk-pop to score the story based on Sherill Tippins' book February House: The Story of W.H. Auden, Carson McCullers, Jane and Paul Bowles, Benjamin Britten and Gypsy Rose Lee, Under One Roof in Wartime America, where the artists came together to create a utopian environment in the wake of the chaos taking place in the world.

So many actors say they knew from an early age that they belonged onstage. But Amanda Peet actually hurled herself onto one -- while a production was in progress -- when she was 3. "Luckily it was a children's play," says Peet, who stars in NBC's "Bent,"...
